Would you get a buzz from chasing stories, interviewing people about the serious issues of life, or life’s oddities? And would you enjoy writing to deadlines? If you have an aptitude for newsgathering, an interest in people, and what’s happening around you, our journalism courses could equip you for an exciting career.
We’re the oldest NCTJ training centre in the country. We achieve exceptional exam results. Norton College was named the number one centre by the NCTJ in 2007 for achieving the best exam results in the country.
And we’re very proud of our success in the jobs market. The majority of our students go straight from college into careers as journalists.
Only last year, one of our ex-students was named ‘Trainee Journalist of the Year 2007’ at the Yorkshire Press Awards.
If you’re keen to become a reporter, show us. We’ll be pleased to hear you have some newsgathering work experience, and have a basic grasp of news writing style. And we’ll be getting quite excited if you tell us you’ve started to learn Teeline shorthand.
In short, impress us with your commitment and determination. And reinforce that impression with good people-skills at the selection interview. After all, interviewing is going to be a major part of your working life.
Norton College, Sheffield, runs NCTJ-accredited graduate 17-week Fast Track courses every September and February.
There is also a 35-week course for candidates who wish to take a more relaxed route or for candidates with a minimum of two A-Levels or equivalent.
Press photography
Self-motivation, energy and enthusiasm are what’s needed to gain a place on the country’s only NCTJ-accredited press photography/photo journalism course at Norton College.
The selection panel will expect candidates to have good photographic knowledge, and to bring along some of their striking images. They are looking for commitment, drive and personality. They’re impressed with candidates who have a capacity to look at the obvious and see something different – or better – by way of a news line and picture.
The 35-week course, for candidates with a minimum of one A-level or equivalent, runs from September. And there is a 12-week block release course for working press photographers each February.
