FdA Journalism and Media Production
Course Details
Do you want to write the news? Direct documentaries? Present radio shows? Edit magazines? This programme offers years of teaching and experience in the area of media production and journalism, providing you with the practical and theoretical skills that are needed within this highly popular industry. The University Centre has extensive links with media industry companies such as YTV Granada, the Yorkshire Post, Press Association and Real Radio which are used to their full potential with guest speakers from industry invited to the Centre to provide valuable first-hand insight into the media.
Course Structure
Year 1
You will have a broad introduction to all aspects of media and journalism with extensive practical opportunities to develop radio, video and appropriate writing and IT skills.
Year 2
You will begin to focus upon your specific career options, following either:
the Journalism package of modules, extending your skills as a print or radio journalist, or
the Broadcast package where you further you knowledge and skills in video/TV and radio production.
Throughout both years there is an element of theoretical study of the media and broadcasting industry. They will form an essential base to the practical skills which you will acquire.
Teaching and Assessment
In order to test different skills and abilities, we use a wide range of assessment methods. These include coursework essays, study logs, examinations, group projects, presentations, practical production, and individual research and dissertations.
Gaining work experience is an essential part of the course in order to prepare you for a successful career.
Career Opportunities
The degree builds an awareness of the content, impact and organisation of the mass media, and provides specific practical training relevant to the workplace. These skills are valuable in many careers, including journalism, broadcasting, publishing, audio and video production, business, the public services, advertising, and public relations.
