Discounted workshops for 21st century journalism

The Press Association is hosting a series of discounted one-day workshops aimed at journalists looking to brush up their 21st century skills in modern-day changing newsrooms.

The news agency's training division will be teaching reporters the art of shooting and editing video for the web, internet writing, blogging and podcasting.

Traditional skills such as subbing, layout, design and photography will also be covered at the sessions which have been reduced by £130 per day.

PA head of training Tony Johnston said: "Many journalists who have found themselves having to adapt to a different newsroom role, have suddenly realised they are not fully equipped with the skills they need.

"The modern publishing business demands more from its journalists than the ability to turn in decent copy or write a pithy headline.

"We were recently approached by a freelance writer who had lost out on a contract with a magazine because he could not supply his own pictures.

"Whereas we will not teach you to be an award-winning photographer in a day, we can show you how to handle a camera and take and transmit publishable pictures.

"It is clear that journalists need to add more and more skills to their portfolio."

Those who attend the workshops will be offered discounts on some of PA's other training courses.

  • The discounted one-day sessions run from 22 July and are being held at PA's training centre in London.
