Six-month shorthand success for journalism student

A journalism student at noSWeat college in London is celebrating passing his 120wpm shorthand exam, taken the same day he turned 24.

Rich Harris was one of around 30 students from the college to pass at speeds from 80wpm upwards, with 14 meeting the benchmark 100wpm standard.

Rich said: "The pain was worth it. I realised when I was on a placement with the Bucks Free Press just how vital shorthand is and that motivated me to put the hours in."

Kenn Toft, shorthand teacher at noSWeat, said: "It's a good effort, to go from 0 to 120 in six months.

"But it was a good set of results across the board."

I am a Lincolnshire shorthand teacher. In 1999 a girl I taught at the rate of one hour a week passed the 140 wam NCTJ exam. This effort was amazing considering she only had one hour a week. We had to do the theory and then speedbuilding. As far as I know no one has exceeded this speed. Her name is Kaye Paddison and she works freelance for the Boston Target. Phyllis Maiden
