Thumbs-up for journalism training at Cornwall College

Cornwall College's post-graduate journalism course is being hailed as one of the best in the country.

The industry's training body, the National Council for the Training of Journalists, praised the commitment of the journalism team and the enthusiasm of students after a recent accreditation visit.

College facilities and strong links with local employers also impressed.

NCTJ chief executive Joanne Butcher said: "The extremely high standard of training and excellent links with employers in Cornwall has seen the post-graduate course at Camborne supplying talented, trained journalists in the region and beyond."

And the college's latest exam results place the 18-week fast-track course in the top three of the 65 approved courses nationwide, putting it in pole position for when the NCTJ announces its new Courses of Excellence next year.

More than 500 ex-students from the Camborne site now work on national and regional papers across the country as well as in television and radio.

Post-graduate course leader Mark Benattar said: "It's fantastic the NCTJ were so impressed during their accreditation visit and I am delighted the students have done so well in their exams.

"This is on top of over 80 per cent of our students employed as journalists at the end of the course, which must be one of the highest employment rates in the country."

College principal John Latham added: "It is fantastic to know that papers, from the nationals in London to weekly papers in the Scottish Highlands, boast journalists trained at this college."
