First graduates join The Argus from neighbouring subs training centre

Two of the first graduates of a trainee sub-editors course run by a new media training company based at The Argus in Brighton have secured jobs at the newspaper.

The course was launched by The Journalist Works earlier this year in response to an industry shortage of skilled production journalists.

And two of its first students have now started work at The Argus after passing their National Council for the Training of Journalists exams in journalism, media law, public affairs and sub-editing first time while on their 12-week Diploma in Production Journalism course.

Laura Gistri, (23), has been appointed as a full-time features sub-editor, and her classmate, David Brothwell,(37), starts as letters editor this week.

Michael Beard, editor of The Argus said: "These were simply the best candidates for the jobs. They stood head and shoulders above the other applicants because of their enthusiasm."

Laura and David were on the first-ever course at The Journalist Works which began in April this year. The next 12-week course starts on Monday.

Paula O'Shea, MD of The Journalist Works, said: "Our courses are all about training people for jobs in journalism.

"Laura and David are great ambassadors for the course and took full advantage of our location right at the heart of the news industry."
