Prizes awarded for best NCE performances

Four journalists have been singled out for awards on the back of their performance in the March National Certificate Examinations, run by the National Council for the Training of Journalists.

They are:

Society Of Editors’ Award (News Interview – £250)

Eleanor Simmonds, Oxford Mail

The examiners' citation said: "Eleanor's copy perfectly captured the sense of drama surrounding the search for an injured man and his young son stranded on a remote moor. A good selection of emotive quotes really made it an easy read."

Esso Award (News Report – £250)

David Williams, Waltham Forest Guardian

The examiners' citation said: "David's paper stood out from the rest because he produced an accurate balanced summary of the key points from both the speech and background material in an easily accessible style.

"He had clearly listened carefully to the speech, selected the best quotes and blended them with essential detail from the briefing notes. The finished article was lively, fast paced and easy to read. He is to be congratulated on this well-deserved award.

Ted Bottomley Award (Mna) (Newspaper Practice – £250)

Elizabeth Smith, South Wales Argus

The examiners' citation said: "The examiners were particularly impressed by Elizabeth's Part A answers which showed a thorough knowledge of the law and the skill to apply it in practice.

"This was combined with two very strong answers in Part B which demonstrated her ability to come up with a fund of ideas to develop a story.

Newsquest Award (Logbook – £250)

Matthew Jackson, Swindon Advertiser

The examiners' citation said: "The breadth and quality of work in this logbook made Matthew a deserved winner.

"There were several examples in which unconventional approaches were taken to intros, and many more in which the writing was sharp and concise.

"The standard of work was invariably high throughout the key tasks."
