Judge each story on its own merits and be responsible in the work you do, was the advice given to journalism hopefuls by MediaWise chair Charles Fletcher.

The journalist and broadcaster, who also runs media support company Caledonia Media Ltd, told an audience at the University of Central Lancashire that the media can help boost democracy.

He spoke about a range of ethical issues surrounding the media.

Students from the university's Department of Journalism were also able to join in a debate, after Charles gave examples of what he considered to be "bad journalism" and described how he would handle sensitive issues such as terrorism, disasters and suicide.

He said journalists should take time to "think longer and be responsible in the work that they do".

He added: "Each story should be judged on its own merit.

"Everyone is going to have a different view on how a story should be run and it's good to discuss this."

MediaWise provides advice, information, research and training on media ethics, and Charles has also worked with journalists from many countries, such as Afghanistan, through his own company.

He said: "I was part of a team that went over to Afghanistan after the Taliban had been thrown out and helped to set up a radio show called 'Good Morning Afghanistan'.

"They needed a massive boost in democracy and the media is an excellent place to start."
