Group training role for Yorkshire editor

John Wilson, editor-in-chief of the Dewsbury Reporter series, has been appointed group editorial trainer for Johnston Press.

He will be involved in delivering all editorial programmes, but will first develop the group's Quark Xpress and Photoshop training courses.

A range of digital publishing courses is also being further developed for the group's journalists.

John will begin his new role in the New Year. He will be based in Leeds and report to David Rowell, the group editorial development executive.

John has spent 32 years in journalism, the majority of which has been with the Yorkshire Post Newspapers group, and he has been in his currrent post for six-and-a-half years.

During his time as editor of the Dewsbury stable of titles he and his team have collected more than 20 awards for editorial excellence and two years ago his flagship title was named Yorkshire's Weekly Newspaper of the Year.

David said: "John will bring a wealth of experience to our training programmes at a time when we are facing many new publishing challenges."

  • The appointment comes on top of news that Johnston Press trainees enjoyed outstanding success in the NCE autumn results.

The group's trainee journalists recorded a 63 per cent pass rate – well ahead of the 48 per cent national average – winning three of the national awards at the same time.

Catherine Lofthouse from Bedfordshire Newspapers won awards for the best interview and speech and Alison Rennie from the Kirkintilloch Herald recorded the best overall performance by a Scottish candidate.
