'Battered Blair' headline for journalism students' 20-page special

Student reporters from De Montfort University’s postgraduate journalism course worked through the night to produce a ‘live’ Election Special newspaper.

The 20-page publication included hard news stories gathered by students at the key counts across Leicestershire.

They phoned in copy to the University where eight students manned a makeshift election newsdesk.

Features on some of the big campaign issues as well as quirky fillers and pull quotes provided a backdrop for the quick turnaround of the results from the county as well as the national picture.

The students worked under the guidance of senior lecturers John Dilley and Tor Clark.

John said: “It was a fantastic experience for all the students who took part – whether they were out at a count or in the University newsroom.

“The students have done many months of real-world district reporting around Leicester but amazing opportunities like this don’t come along often and it’s important to grab them when you can.”
