Journalism hopeful to report overseas after bursary win

Cardiff University journalism student Gwyneth Rees has been awarded a £1,000 bursary to allow her to work as a reporter in Malawi.

Gwyneth, (24), who has been studying for a postgraduate diploma in journalism studies, won the Welsh Livery Guild travel bursary in a contest among students on the course.

She will spend a month working as a reporter on the Malawi Chronicle, a newspaper renowned for its journalistic integrity and which, unusually, has no allegiance to the government or to opposition parties.

It is a weekly newspaper with six journalists, and has been prone to government harassment.

Gwyneth said: "It's an exciting prospect and will be a hugely valuable experience.

"I have worked on various newspapers around Britain, including some work experience on the South Wales Echo, but this will be totally different."

The Welsh Livery Guild was formed to promote education, science and the fine arts and in particular the promotion of skills and associated professional activities in Wales.

The purpose of the award is to enable a postgraduate student from Wales, at the end of his or her course but before starting full-time employment, to travel overseas to broaden his or her experience of the media. This is the first travel scholarship awarded by the Guild in its ten-year history.
