Post's Steve joins press photography exams team

South Wales Evening Post picture editor Steve Phillips has been invited to join the photojournalism board of the NCTJ.

Steve, (35), will join five other members on the board which moderates, examines and helps in the training of press photographers and photojournalists.

He said: "I am delighted to be invited to join the board, it is a great opportunity to give something back to the industry.

"It is also exciting to see the wealth of talent coming through the system and to be involved in their training and development."

Steve (pictured) has worked on newspapers for 17 years, starting his career at the Merthyr Express.

He passed his NCTJ exam at Sheffield in 1991 while working as a junior press photographer at the Evening Post, and also worked as a senior photographer and deputy picture editor for the South Wales Echo in Cardiff before becoming chief photographer at the South Wales Argus in Newport.

He rejoined the Evening Post as picture editor last year.

Other members of the NCTJ photojournalism board are:

  • Peter Dash, board chairman, who has worked as a senior photographer and picture editor for the South Wales Argus for 33 years;
  • Paul Delmar, head of photojournalism at Norton College Sheffield;
  • Doreen Spooner, the first female photographer to work in Fleet Street and former fashion photographer for the Daily Mirror;
  • Angus Thompson of Fuji Imaging who is a digital photography expert and freelance press photographer;
  • Freelance photographer Andrew Fox.

    The board meets twice a year in May and November to examine the work of trainee press photographers and photojournalists taking the NCTJ courses at Norton College Sheffield.
