Journalism trainer in demand in the Falklands

Regional newspaper consultant and journalism trainer David Scott is to set off on a 20,000 mile round trip next week.

He has been asked to visit the Falkland Islands again to advise a Government-appointed Media Trust on a host of matters involving the future direction of both the print media and radio.

It will make a change from David's usual tour of the UK, where he runs various journalism training courses for around 200 regional newspapers.

Keen to avoid difficulties he has encountered on his past two trips to the Falklands when flying with the RAF from Brize Norton, David has opted to travel from his Torquay home to Heathrow and then catch flights to Madrid, Santiago in Chile, Punta Arenas - near Cape Horn - and then from there to Port Stanley.

It will take him three days door to door.

David (left) will spend seven days on the Falklands advising members of the Media Trust, meeting government officials and liaising with staff at the islands' newspaper the Penguin News and popular radio station.

He will then make the three day return trip via the same route.

He said: "I have enjoyed my previous two visits when I trained staff on Penguin News.

"The islands are fascinating. The first time I traced the route the soldiers followed from San Carlos Bay to Stanley in the 1982 war, while the second time I spent a day watching the wonderful wildlife including 1,000 king penguins."

David hopes to be back on Tuesday, March 30. And after a couple of days' rest he will then be on more local travels to Gloucestershire where he is running a senior law course refresher and attending a newspaper awards dinner.
