A new professor of journalism at the University of Lincoln is aiming to put the institution on the map as a centre of excellence for the subject.
Professor John Tulloch has joined the Faculty of Media and Humanities from the University of Westminster, where he was Chair of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Now he's ready to bring his expertise to Lincoln and launch a new School of Journalism.
He said: "There has been a lot of investment into the facilities here and we are going to build on that basis for the new School of Journalism.
"Industry placements are vital and I hope to develop a culture where students go out and get the necessary experience with the support of the school."
He also aims to develop good quality postgraduate courses in journalism and related subjects and encourage research in the subject.
After graduating from the University of York with an English degree Professor Tulloch trained as a business journalist while working on financial newspapers.
For the past 20 years he has worked in journalism education, starting out as a researcher at the University of Leeds. He later joined the Polytechnic of Central London (which later became the University of Westminster) to help start new journalism courses.
While at Westminster he developed a range of postgraduate courses, including International Journalism and Public Relations. He is also very proud of having run a programme for young Indian newspaper journalists funded by the British Foreign Office Chevening Scholarships.
He is co-editor of 'Tabloid Tales: Global Debates on Media Standards'. The book focuses on the growing emphasis on human interest stories, the increasing coverage of private lives of public figures and the decline of serious news.
