Preparations are taking place at the National Council for the Training of Journalists, ready for the new logbooks which will be assessed for the first time next April.

Five chief markers have been appointed from the newspaper journalism exam board and they are currently undergoing training for the task.

The on-the-job training logbook was launched last year for trainees sitting the National Certificate Examination, and represented one of the biggest changes to the NCE in nearly 50 years.

Those candidates sitting the NCE for the first time on April 2 will need to submit their completed logbook before they sit their final exams, and these will be despatched to one of the five regional marking centres at Darlington, York, Harlow, Coventry and Southampton.

It will then be marked as a fourth section of the NCE, alongside the speech, interview and newspaper practice papers.

Each logbook carries a maximum of 100 marks for presentation and successful completion of the key tasks, and all of the key tasks need to be completed successfully in order to pass.
