De Montfort University is top of the class

Leicester's De Montfort University is top of the class in this year's National Council for the Training of Journalists examination resultsleague tables.

The university's post graduate diploma in journalism was the best performing course, closely followed by the University of Central Lancashire's post graduate diploma course.

Students often find reaching shorthand speeds of 100wpm a considerable challenge, but there were notable success stories at Lambeth College, the University of Central Lancashire and Cardiff University, where impressive results were achieved.

League tables are not published but provide a useful benchmarking tool for universities and colleges running NCTJ accredited courses. They are also used to assist with NCTJ accreditation and to monitor standards.

In 2002-3 the number of students participating in NCTJ accredited journalism courses was 1,041, which increased from 954 in 2001-2.
