Journalist's online first

A Nigerian man has become the first person in his country to gain an MA in Online Journalism - after studying at Nottingham Trent University.

Qasim Akinreti has now returned to his homeland to train colleagues and publish a handbook about online journalism for Nigerian training institutions.

Before arriving in Nottingham, Qasim worked for a decade with Voice of Nigeria, an international radio broadcasting service, as a news producer and political correspondent.

He said journalism in Nigeria is highly challenging - only a few journalists have access to a laptop or desk computer, mobile phones or even landline phones at home to file stories.

He said: "In most cases getting stories does not come easily, as access to vital information can prove difficult.

"Postgraduate study at Nottingham Trent helped me to develop the skills I need to improve the Voice of Nigeria website and create a news website with appropriate audio and video materials."
