College's work with the industry is recognised

Darlington College of Technology has received an award in recognition of its work with the media industry.

The college's media department, which trains journalists for Newsquest and Johnston Press, has been presented with a North-East Training Award 2003 by UK Skills.

The awards attracted around 200 entries from across the region, and Darlington was the only college on a shortlist of 15.

BBC presenter Wendy Gibson and UK Skills chief executive Linda Ammon, presented the award to the college's principal and chief executive, Sarah Farley, and its director of external relations, Sue Campbell, at a ceremony in Newcastle.

The college was also designated a Centre of Vocational Excellence last year, and since then has invested heavily in state of the art media hardware and software.

It has offered the NCTJ pre-entry certificate in print journalism course since the early 1960s, and now also runs a digital photojournalism course, an NCTJ Magazine Journalism course and a 15-week sub-editing for beginners course, as well as short courses in Quark, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, press release writing, law and shorthand.
