West Briton editor John Pearn was one of several industry experts helping graduates of Falmouth College of Arts' writing courses to make the transition into the world of work.

He joined other publishing experts, as well as practitioners from the worlds of public relations and online feature writing, who each gave a 'warts and all' talk to this year's students from the postgraduate diploma in professional writing.

They discussed how students can make the most of the many employment and freelance opportunities that await them.

Former solicitor Sarah Harvey, who relocated to Cornwall to take the professional writing course said: "It was really good to hear about the realities of the industry straight from the horse's mouth, which helps me to be realistic about my ambition to remain in the South West as a freelance writer."

Christina Bunce, who runs the programme, said the day was a great success: "It is crucial for students to gain confidence in talking to professionals and to have a realistic approach to entering the industry."
