A new digital photojournalism course is to be launched at Darlington College in September.
The course, which will deal almost exclusively in digital images, is being backed by regional newspapers from across the UK, as well as some of the country's top press agencies.
Darlington College has been named a Centre of Vocational Excellence in Digital Media - the only one in the North.
It has invested heavily in state-of-the-art media hardware and software, including 52 G4 Apple Macs, digital video and stills cameras, a digital TV studio and associated digital imaging software.
The new course, which the college hopes to have accredited by the NCTJ, will also feature a moving image module to reflect the video and TV facilities.
Head of school of journalism Tony Metcalf said: "Our industry partners, especially the press agencies, tell us that they are increasingly shooting digital video - from which they can grab a digital still if necessary.
"Our new course will feature all of the traditional press photography skills - but will also teach video filming and editing, as well as major modules on photojournalism and newspaper practice.
"Students will take the NCTJ law and newspaper practice exams, as well as producing a portfolio of still and moving images.
"We've had tremendous backing from working picture editors and photojournalists for the idea - they regard the new course as highly relevant for the 21st century."
David Parry, of the Ross Parry agency in Leeds has helped write the course and will be involved, part-time, in teaching students.
The College is also arranging work experience for students with regional newspapers and press agencies across the UK.
The 30-week course begins in early September and costs £1,100. Details are available from the university on 01325 503095.
