Training centre wins specialist status

A comprehensive school that offers journalism training has won specialist media arts college status - which will bring it nearly £1m during the next four years.

Coombeshead College in Newton Abbot gives budding journalists the chance to start their training from the age of 16.

It is approved by the NCTJ and supported by Northcliffe Newspapers, which offers training placements through its Westcountry Publications group.

And it is now only one of a handful of schools in the UK with specialist status and staff believe all its students will benefit.

The new-found status will mean:

  • extra staff;
  • a college radio station and TV studio;
  • creation of a 'live' newsroom;
  • a new media centre.

    Assistant principal John Patton said: "This is going to mean a huge difference to the whole college.

    "There is a whole range of exciting opportunities.

    "We are all delighted at being successful in our bid for media arts college status."
