Trainee journalists sitting the National Certificate Examination may increase their chances of success by more than 20 per cent if they attend a refresher course.
The National Council for the Training of Journalists has revealed figures for the last NCE in October which show first time trainees from its three main refresher courses gained a 68 per cent success rate. This compares to an overall pass of 44 per cent.
In addition, trainees who attended NCTJ refresher courses scooped four of the seven awards presented to commend success in the examination.
The training organisation says that the NCE is the most popular and widely accepted qualifying journalism exam in the UK.
It is seen as a benchmark for high standards in the newspaper industry.
Held twice a year, the exam is open to trainees registered with the NCTJ who have met the necessary criteria.
Jan Alder, of the NCTJ, said: "Trainee journalists have to pass a number of preliminary exams before they can sit the NCE. They are also required to spend at least 18 months gaining valuable on-the-job experience.
"Passing the NCE gives trainees a recognised senior status.
"Like any exam, preparation is crucial and we recommend trainees take advantage of our refresher courses to improve their chances of success. The next NCE is in April with pre-exam courses available. Early booking is advisable."
