Sally Mellis has been confirmed as chief executive of the National Council for the Training of Journalists.
She had been acting chief executive since the sudden death of Rob Selwood in December.
Sally, (55), joined the NCTJ in 1982 and was formerly deputy chief executive and training director.
NCTJ chairman Rodney Bennett-England said: "Her wealth of experience and contacts in the industry were deciding factors.
"The NCTJ has re-established its leading role in journalism training by listening to the needs of proprietors and editors.
"Over 1,000 newspaper titles are now back in the per-capita system."
