Echo searches for local talent

The Lincolnshire Echo is offering wannabe journalists a rare chance to break into the industry with a journalism scholarship resulting in the chance of a one-year contract on the newspaper.

In partnership with the University of Lincoln, the newspaper is searching for local people to join the scholarship scheme, which is now in its third year.

The Echo will choose one or two successful candidates who will then be offered a place on the university's three-year journalism degree course and will also receive a weekly work placement at the newspaper.

Once they have successfully completed the course they will be considered for a one-year contract on the newspaper.

Deputy editor Richard Bowyer said: "Recruitment can be a difficult thing. We are keen to recruit local people from all walks of life who are bright and intelligent and who are prepared to go to university for three years.

"During that time the candidates will come to work for at the paper at least one day a week and perhaps in the holidays too.

"They will start by writing nibs and picture captions but will soon progress to writing page leads and this experience will benefit them on their course.

"There are no financial rewards with the scholarship but we try and help them as much as we can.

"By the end of the three years they will be well-versed on the workings of the Echo."
