Newspaper's collaboration on TV training project

Grimsby College's NVQ4 Broadcast Journalism course has been voted bestcollege-based media course in the country in the recent Association of Colleges Beacon Awards.

The good news was announced by Education Secretary Estelle Morris at the annual principals' conference in London.

The award recognises the unique opportunities offered by the course for students to have their work broadcast through Grimsby TV.

The project is the result of a three-way partnership between the college, the Grimsby Telegraph and local cable network Channel Seven.

Candidates at the now re-branded East Coast Media Centre - the media wing of Grimsby college - are playing a vital part in the research and development of local town television as part of their highly practical 40-week learning programme.

Other newspapers have been involved in local television but this scheme is different because it does not rely on the newspaper reporters to double up their duties to report stories.

The level 3 and 4 NVQ students consult with the authors of stories on a daily basis and produce a weekly news review based on the content in the Grimsby Telegraph.

Part ownership of the project has been given to the newspaper to ensure that it has another medium in its portfolio in a rapidly changing technolgical world.

Telegraph editor Peter Moore said: "We are delighted that the project has been honoured so early in its life, but it is very gratifying for us as a company to be helping to shape the future of local television."
