New recruits join press scholar scheme

Two new wannabe reporters have joined the Hull Daily Mail's successful journalism scholar scheme.

David Paine, (32), and Matthew Stamper, (18), are the latest recruits to the scheme which gives people who have lived in the Mail's circulation area for at least 10 years the chance of a career in newspapers.

As part of the scheme, scholars study for a BA (Hons) degree in journalism at the University of Lincoln, and also spend 50 days each year at the Mail's offices to gain practical experience.

David and Matthew will be guaranteed jobs as trainee reporters when they graduate and they will also have the chance to work towards their NVQ Level 4 in newspaper journalism, which would qualify them as senior reporters.

Assistant editor Marc Astley said: "The Scholars scheme has been a phenomenal success. Our first recruits will become journalists next year and after that we will be appointing scholars as trainee reporters following their graduation every summer."

  • The scholar scheme began in 1999, and five people are currently working towards their degrees.
