A former editor who joined the main board of directors of the National Council for the Training of Journalists has resigned his post due to ill health.

Brian Mason was also vice chairman of the Newspaper Journalism Board , a director of NCTJ Training and a marker and moderator of the preliminary exams run by the organisation.

Brian began his career in journalism at the Kentish Times in 1958 as a trainee and moved to the Wellington Journal and Shrewsbury News.

He became editor of the Telford Journal, where he remained for eight years before being appointed editorial training officer of the Midland News Association in 1981.

As an in-company trainer he also helped tutor NCTJ subbing courses and ran the Birmingham examinations centre for ten years.

On other professional bodies, he served on the Newspaper Society Training Committee and helped re-write the new journalism NVQ standards.
