Photographer with 40-year career behind him has died

A former Scotsman and Edinburgh Evening News photographer has died.

Jack Crombie was 74 when he passed away at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary after suffering a heart attack.

His career spanned more than 40 years, the majority of which he spent covering big sporting events.

In 1954, he joined the photography team at The Scotsman and the Evening Dispatch – later to become the Edinburgh Evening News.

His particular love was covering golf tournaments, being a keen player himself, as well as rugby matches.

In 1984 he saw Scotland's first Five Nations 'Grand Slam' since 1925 when they beat France.

Jack also snapped visiting celebrities, including cowboy actor Roy Rogers and his trusty companion Trigger, and covered Royal Visits including the Queen's visit to Haddington in July.

Jack, who lived in Prestonpans, east of Edinburgh, retired in the mid-1990s but continued to work as a freelancer.

In September he holidayed in Majorca and it was here that he started to suffer with chest pains and later died on December 3.
