Photographer 'stunned' after football match arrest

A freelance photographer has told how was "absolutely stunned" when he was arrested while covering a Mansfield Town football match for the Nottingham Evening Post on Saturday.

Dan Westwell, (32), had been pitchside during the match when he was asked by stewards to leave the ground, and was then arrested and taken to Mansfield Police Station.

He was later charged with a public order offence and released on bail. He is due to appear at Mansfield Magistrates Court on Friday.

The photographer, who also covers away matches for the Mansfield Chad, said: "I was absolutely stunned at what happened on Saturday at Field Mill.

"As far as I was concerned I was just doing my job as I do every week following Mansfield Town all over the country."

Tensions among the crowd were running high at the club's ground on Saturday, with loud chants against Mansfield Town FC owner Keith Haslam.

Dan said he still had not been told why he was removed from the ground, but believes it may have been because he had a photograph of a 'Haslam Out' road sign displayed on his laptop.

He said: "I am still stunned by it all. I still haven't been told why I was ejected."

And he thanked fans who had sent messages of support.

He said: "I would also like to thank each and every Mansfield Town supporter for their amazing support and backing that I have been shown since the incident.

"I have had hundreds of e-mails, text messages, phone calls and also seen several Internet message boards where there are hundreds of people supporting me. I can't thank you all enough for that support."
