Photo student wins £2,500 grant for top-class shots

Photojournalism student Irina Werning has won a prestigious international photography scholarship for her pictures of high-class partygoers in London.

Irina, who is studying for an MA in Photojournalism at the University of Westminster, will receive a grant of £2,500, as well as £500 in photographic vouchers, from the Ian Parry Scholarship.

The scholarship was set up in the memory of former Rhyl Journal and Evening Leader photojournalist Ian Parry who was killed in a plane crash in 1989 after covering the revolution in Romania for the Sunday Times.

Irina’s pictures will be published in the Sunday Times magazine, and some of her work is to be displayed for two weeks at the Getty Images Gallery, London.

She came top of a record number of entries from as far away as Argentina, Iran and Canada.

She said: "I'm delighted to win the award. I was about to leave London before discovering the MA Photojournalism course and it was my tutor Colin Jacobson who kept me from going.

"The award has opened lots of doors for me and I can do lots of the things I wanted to do."

Course leader Colin said: "This course has been growing, both in the number and the quality of students, over the past few years.

"Congratulations to Irina for winning this very well-deserved award, which reflects the growing stature of the course."
