A freelance photographer has won £45,000 in an out-of-court settlement over copyright infringement.
Chris Tofalos, who is based in Bolton, claimed against former client English Basketball after it re-used his images more than 200 times without paying the appropriate fees.
This was despite a written contract between the photographer and the sport's governing body stipulating the fees he would receive if they made unauthorised use of his work.
During his three-year battle Chris received help and support from the National Union of Journalists, of which he is a member, and Kate Fox, copyright specialist with Thompson's Solicitors, who reached agreement with English Basketball after months of negotiation.
Chris said: "I am very pleased the three-year struggle is finally over and delighted with the outcome.
"Initially, I was faced with the monumental task of extensive and seemingly uncontrollable copyright infringement without the financial means to take legal action.
"Thankfully the NUJ provided all the financial support and legal expertise required and justice was finally done."
NUJ freelance organiser John Toner added: "Chris has been very tenacious during what has been a very anxious time for him and his family. I am pleased for him that it is finally over."
