Photo awards attract 'overwhelming' response

More than 8,000 images have been submitted to this year's Picture Editors' Awards.

The entry deadline for the Portfolio and Single Image categories of the competition passed this week, and organisers say that the content and presentation of the submissions has been overwhelmingly good this year.

With a 14 per cent increase in entries, it promises to be a tightly fought competition, and work has now begun on producing the 8,300 prints which will be laid before the nominations jury ahead of March 1, when the shortlist is announced.

Entries are still being accepted in the Newspaper of the Year category, where judges will be looking for titles which demonstrate an enthusiasm for good photography both in how the picture is taken and how it is displayed to the reader.

The 2005 Student Award, for students currently enrolled in a recognised photography course or who completed their course during 2004 and plan to follow a career in photographic journalism, is also still accepting entries.

Entries for Newspaper of the Year must be received by March 31, while the deadline for the Student Award is April 5.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony in the Great Hall of Guildhall in London on Monday, May 23.
