Photographer escapes death in accident blackspot crash

A Peterborough Evening Telegraph photographer escaped death when his car crashed at an accident blackspot - just days before the newspaper was due to launch a campaign to make the road safer.

Alan Storer, (27), managed to escape from the wreckage of his Vauxhall Astra after it skidded, hit a grass bank and spun through the air into a field while he was travelling to Peterborough on East Delph Road, between Whittlesey and Thorney on Saturday.

The same stretch of road has seen a number of accidents in the past two years - including two in recent weeks which resulted in fatalities.

And in a bizarre coincidence the Evening Teleraph had planned to launch its Stop The Carnage campaign on Monday - which it did, together with a report on Alan's crash.

Alan said: "I feel lucky to be alive. All I remember is there being a greasy patch on the road, which I drove into.

"The car then started spinning and hit the verge, which is when it left the road.

"After that, it is a blur. I think it spun in the air and then came down on its side, but it happened so quickly, and I was just in a state of shock at the time."

After escaping from the crumpled car (above), Alan called friends who contacted the emergency services.

He was then taken to Peterborough District Hospital and released the same day.

He said: "I feel very unlucky. I was only going about 50mph and still can't really understand how it happened.

"I still feel very sore and bruised, but apart, from that I am all right."
