Key events captured in new book

Some of the best press photography from the past 15 years has been unveiled this week in a new book put together by the British Press Photographers' Association.

Five Thousand Days – Press Photography in a Changing World features images of many of world's key events, from the 1989 revolution in Prague to Jonny Wilkinson's World Cup-winning kick, as captured by a host of regional and national press photographers.

More than 350 images were chosen for inclusion in the book, and an accompanying exhibition, by the photographers association from the work of its members.

It encompasses everything from shattering global events such as September 11 to humorous pictures in six chapters entitled Hard News, Inside Pages, In the Public Eye, Daily Life, Arts and Entertainment and Sport.

Among the regional press photographers to have contributed are Stuart Emmerson from the Harrow and Wembley Observer series, Richard Addison of the Hull Daily Mail, Mark Lewis from the South Wales Argus, and the Northern Echo's Stuart Boulton.

  • Five Thousand Days – Press Photography in a Changing World, with a foreword by Harold Evans, is published by David and Charles, priced £29.99. ISBN: 0-7153-1904-3.

The accompanying exhibition is now open at the National Theatre Lyttelton Foyer, and runs until December 4. It is open Monday to Saturday from 10am until 11pm, and admission is free.
