Sheffield College scoops surprise picture award

A popular press photography training venue has scooped another top honour.

Sheffield College's NCTJ press photography and photojournalism department was singled out for a prestigious extraordinary award from the UK Picture Editors' Guild.

Guild members bestowed the surprise award - for the country's top training centre and course leader - at a ceremony at the Guildhall in London.

Paul Delmar (right), who heads the courses at Sheffield College, stepped forward to receive a silver hand-crafted trophy from Alistair Campbell, the Prime Minister's official spokesman in front of an audience of more than 600.

Alistair told Paul: "This award is richly deserved. I'm sure you are responsible for training most of the photographers in this room."

The award was handed over at the Picture Editors' Awards ceremony, where many existing and former Sheffield students were receiving honours too.

Paul said: "I'm thrilled, but this award is really a reflection of the excellence of so many of the Sheffield-trained press photographers who have gone on to achieve national and international recognition.

"It's extremely gratifying that our students' enthusiasm, hard work and sheer ability continue to keep us in the honours list."

The courses are based at the Norton College which is part of the Sheffield College.
