Contest win sees photo displayed at V&A

A press photographer is about to see her work displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Barbara Evripidou (below), of the Bristol Evening Post, won a national competition for her portrait which captured a magical bond between a mother and her baby.

She had to find a picture that captured what everyday life is like for people with a learning disability for the Mencap competition, which was judged by photography legend David Bailey.

Barbara's entry (below) was of HTV presenter Fiona Wilson and her son Charles, who has Down's Syndrome.

The picture was taken in a room full of parents and children who were attending a Down's Syndrome educational trust meeting.

Barbara said: "I just sat next to Fiona, who was making Charles laugh, and started taking pictures.

"It was easy to take pictures of them because they have a very natural chemistry. Charles adores his mum and she adores him."

Fiona writes a column for the Post for the Saturday magazine Seven, and entered the photo for the contest without telling Barbara.

Barbara said: "The first I knew about the competition was when Fiona rang me to sign the release forms.

"When I found out the photograph had won I was really surprised and really pleased. Charles is a very cute baby."

The award ceremony - where Barnara will receive a host of photographic prizes - will be on February 18 at the V&A Museum.
