The 2003 Picture Editors' Awards have been launched with the announcement of the categories and prizes for the event.
The awards will see photographers from around the regional press battle with agency snappers and staffers from the nationals in 18 categories with prize money of more than £18,000 up for grabs.
Now in their 10th year, the awards have been expanded to fully recognise the work of photographers in the regions and on local newspapers, and, in recognition of its significance, the sports category has become a portfolio award for the first time.

The Fujifilm Photographer of the Year - Local Newspapers
The Nikon Photo Essay Award
The Nikon Sports Photographer of the Year
Diageo Young Photographer of the Year Student Award:
The Corporation of London's Student AwardSingle Picture Categories:
The Nikon Arts and Entertainment Photographer of the Year
The Guinness Award for Best Black and White Photograph
Business and Industry Photographer of the Year - The Lord Mayor's Award
The Nikon Features Photographer of the Year
The Fujifilm News Photographer of the Year
The Fujifilm Royal Photographer of the YearPhotographers will be able to submit their entries online through the Picture Editors' Awards website from January 1, 2003 until February 10, and nominations will be announced on March 10.
All British and Irish picture editors will be invited to vote for the winners in the portfolio and single print categories.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in the Great Hall of Guildhall in London on Monday, May 12.

Earlier this year the Picture Editors' Awards merged with the Nikon Press Awards, with Nikon UK joining sponsors Fujifilm, Getty Images, the Corporation of London, Diageo and CETA Imaging in providing financial and other support. Back to the photography index
