Tributes paid after sudden death

A press photographer who was well-known around north-east Somerset has died suddenly, aged 58.

Freelancer John Frapwell worked for the Somerset Standard, Fosseway Magazine, the Frome and District Weekly and the Frome Times.

He was born and bred in Frome, lived in the town all his life, and was a familiar face at public functions, social events and the stage shows that he regularly reviewed.

Alan Sandall, former editor of the Somerset Standard, said: "John was the Somerset Standard photo journalist for many years while I was there.

"He did a good job and he had been involved a great deal with the community.

"He did a lot to help a lot of organisations in the area."

Before embarking on a career as a freelance photographer, John spent several years working as a draughtsman for JW Singers, before leaving in 1984 to pursue his photographic career.

Away from work, John was a member of the Frome Rotary Club and was also passionate about the music of Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison. He was divorced, and leaves a 16-year-old daughter, Joanne, and his father, Bill Frapwell.

The Standard's editoral comment this week added: "Mr Frapwell recorded the events of Frome over many years and his memory lives on through these pictures - many of which graced this newspaper.

"Our condolences to his family at this time."
