Argus archives trawled for photographic record

Some of the best photos from The Argus archives have been brought together in one book covering the entire 20th Century.

The Argus has been recording events in Brighton since 1880 and over the years many thousands of pictures have been taken of events both big and small.

Now Argus photographer Skye Brackpool, who spent many hours trawling through the newspaper's archives, has chosen the most dramatic, poignant and beautiful photographs to form the book Brighton Remembered.

The book's 350 photographs cover each decade dating back to 1778 to produce a record of what life was like and range from those of the seafront in Victorian times and images of Edwardian elegances to the damage caused to Brighton in the Second World War.

And famous events such as the bombing of The Grand hotel in 1984 and the Great Storm three years later are also included along with many more of ordinary but often nostalgic events.
