Poor sight no hindrance to darkroom assistant

A York man who worked in the Evening Press photography department for more than a decade has died age 88.

Raymond Richards worked at the Press as a skilled printer and darkroom operative until 1979, despite losing most of his sight in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. He was an RAF photographer serving on Java Island when he was captured.

Evening Press picture editor Martin Oates remembers Raymond from his time as a trainee photographer.

He said: "He was a very likable man who passed on his expertise to all the photographic staff and, although his sight was very poor, he was an excellent printer."

He is survived by his wife Marie, daughters Anne and Monique, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
