Death of former picture editor

Former Leicester Mercury picture editor Eric Taylor has died aged 82.

Mr Taylor worked on the Leicester Evening Mail and the Leicester Mercury for 44 years.

He joined the Evening Mail in 1939, but when the Second World War broke out and he was called up by the Army where he served as a radio operator with the Royal Corps of Signals.

He returned to Leicester in 1946 to become a photographer and picture editor.

He joined the Leicester Mercury as deputy picture editor in 1963 after the Evening Mail closed, and became picture editor in 1978.

He retired in 1983, aged 64.

Lawrie Simpkin, who worked with him at the Mercury said: "He was a feisty individual who had a good eye for a picture."

Mr Taylor's wife, Ivy, died in 1992. The couple did not have any children.
