Photographers snap up top awards

Two Norfolk Publishing group photographers are snap happy after winning awards in the 2001 Sport England Photographic Awards.

Adrian Judd from the Evening News picked up the Eastern Region Sports Photographer of the Year while Eastern Daily Press photographer John Hocknell collected the Sports Photograph of the Year.

John, (62), also came third in the Sports Photographer of the Year competition.

He was surprised to win with his picture (above) of pupils from Lynn's King Edward VII High School at football practice and said: "That picture was entered as an afterthought really. If I'd had to choose a picture to win, it wouldn't have been that one."

But what makes a good sports picture?

"It's all down to visual impact really," he said.
"It's important to photograph something that is slightly different."

The judges revealed that it was the diversity of photographs submitted by Adrian which resulted in his success.

He entered five pictures that showed swimmers at the University of East Anglia, an angling day at Bawburgh Lakes and table tennis championships at Swanton Morley, among other sports.

John and Adrian’s winning photographs will now go forward to the National Sports Photographer of the Year competition.
