The Picture Editors' Awards, cancelled for 2002 because of a lack of adequate funding, have been rescued by Getty Images.

Lead sponsor Getty Images joins the Corporation of London, Fujifilm, and Guinness, all of whom have supported the awards since they were founded almost a decade ago.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony in the Great Hall of Guildhall in London.

Jonathan Klein, co-founder and chief executive officer of Getty Images, said: "2001 has proven to be a remarkable year in photographic journalism.

"We are delighted to support the awards, acknowledged as being the key annual event for picture editors and photographers."

Entries for the 2002 Picture Editors' Awards, the most valuable in UK andIrish press photography, will be accepted from Monday, January 21 and closeat noon on Tuesday, February 12.

Photographers can register at the Picture Editors' website from Thursday.

Last year, Reuters photographer Jonathan Evans was named Photographer of the Year and was handed the award at the event where 38 other photographers were also honoured.

The contest attracted entries from almost 650 photographers.
