Brian retires after 40 years at the Chronicle

Bath Chronicle photographer Brian Stevens has retired after 40 years with the paper.

He started his career at the Wiltshire Gazette, and intially arrived at the Chronicle to fill in for six months before taking up a job on the Daily Express - however 40 years later he was still there.

Despite being constantly approached by the nationals, Brian stayed in Bath where he felt he was at the cutting edge of the new style of news photography.

During his time at the paper he has outlasted seven editors, seen the evolution of 35mm and then digital photography, and twice turned down the position of chief photographer - very much a desk job - in favour of his passion for taking pictures and meeting people.

Brian's retirement does not mean he will be packing away his lens just yet - he already has freelance work planned in the US, followed by assignments in Italy and France.
