Mayor pays tribute to camera ace Jack

A leading public citizen in Lancashire took time out from his leaving speech to pay tribute to a popular local freelance photographer who died recently.

In his final speech as Mayor of Hyndburn, Coun Doug Hayes gave thanks to Jack Barry, who died of heart problems shortly after completing a job for the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.

Coun Hayes said: "Our year in office has been marred by one sad event, the death of the Evening Telegraph's photographer Jack Barry. His death was a sad loss."

Mr Barry, 59, was a highly respected figure at the Telegraph.

On the night of his death, he had returned home after a night job and later complained of indigestion.

Tablets had seemed to remedy the situation but in the middle of the night, Jack awoke with pain and within minutes he was dead.

He leaves behind his wife Ann, and two children, Caroline Mahon and Jonathon Barry who also works as a photographer with the Telegraph.
