Eastern Counties Newspapers has carried off two awards at a regional sports photography competition.

Keith Whitmore, of the Eastern Evening News, carried off the two major trophies in the Sport England East Regional Service to Sport and Sports Photographic Competition Awards 2000.

He was named East Region Sports Photographer of the Year for an impressive folio of five prints which included the East Region Sports Photograph of the Year.

John Hocknell, based at the King's Lynn office of ECN, ensured his continuing inclusion in the prize list by being judged runner-up in the Sports Photographer of the Year category.

Matthew Power, of the Cambridge Evening News, was third.

The sports hall at Whittlesey's Manor Leisure Centre in Cambridgeshire was transformed into a colourful tented area for event and presentations by athlete Steve Cram.

Hosted by Fenland District Council, the prize-winners and their guests enjoyed a relaxed evening presided over by region director Jeff Neslen.
