Finbarr said: "I took pictures, he attacked me and the manager arrived, all at the same moment. I carried on taking pictures throughout and got what I wanted.
"I had a discussion with the manager on the way out and explained what had happened and I was then banned for life!"
Both the editor and news editor supported his bid to get a decent photo.Thompson, (70), had pleaded guilty to four charges of taking and making indecent photographs of a child. The court was told the girl was under the age of 14 at the time.
The hearing was adjourned for probation reports.
The defence solicitor had made an application to ban the publication of Thompson's name but the Echo successfully challenged the request.The subsequent story was written taking account of the recent conviction of two Sussex editors found guilty of contravening a Section 39 identification order.
