In the remaining specialist categories, Robert Perry of Scotland on Sunday was awarded the Fujifilm Royal Photographer of the Year title, and Tom Stoddart, of the Independent Photographers' Group, was named Fujifilm Features Photographer of the Year.
Veteran Daily Express photographer John Downing was honoured with the Picture Editor's Guild Lifetime Achievement Award, only the second to be awarded in the Guild's 30 year history. The first went to Horst Faas, AP's London-based picture editor and double Pulitzer prize winner.
Downing (60), chief photographer of the Express titles, was awarded the MBE for services to journalism in 1992. He has been named Photographer of the Year a record seven times.
The Awards were sponsored by Fujifilm with additional funding from Guinness and the Corporation of London.
A shortlist of 44 nominations was announced two weeks ago following judging by 39 picture editors from newspapers and news agencies throughout the UK and Ireland.
