Reuters photographer Jonathan Evans has been named Fujifilm Photographer of the Year in the 2000 Picture Editors' Awards.

He was handed the award at the Guildhall in the City of London, where 38 other photographers were also honoured.

Scotland's Sunday Herald took the Newspaper of the Year title, and the Evening Standard's ES Magazine was voted Newspaper Magazine of the Year.

Mo Mowlam, Minister for the Cabinet Office, and the Lord Mayor, Alderman David Howard, presented the awards before an audience of 600 journalists and photographers.

Regional press winners included John James, from the Birmingham Post, Jim Holden, from the Evening Argus, and Richard Swingler, of the South Wales Echo.

The 2000 Awards, organised by the Picture Editors' Guild, attracted entries from almost 650 photographers.

Photographers from Reuters and The Independent each triumphed with a hat-trick of prizes, the haul including Jonathan Evans' top prize, which also brought him £5,000.
