The nominated photographs for the Picture Editors' Awards 2000 can now be viewed online.

More than 700 entries have been whittled down to the final 44, and all of the photos and portfolios can be viewed here.

The finalists were chosen by a jury of 40 picture editors from the national and regional press and include entries from the UK and abroad.

More than half were entered electronically and transferred into prints for judging.

The 2000 Awards, organised by the Picture Editors' Guild, will be presented at a ceremony in the Great Hall of Guildhall before an invited audience on Monday, February 12.

The Independent leads the league table with no less than six nominations, followed by The Scotsman and Reuters with four each. A total of seven nominations go to newspaper photographers working for Scottish titles.
